In “The Spectre of Boko Haram,” a documentary awarded the Tiger Award at the Rotterdam Film Festival, Cameroonian filmmaker Cyrielle Raingou captures the daily lives of children in Cameroon who must navigate life under the persistent shadow of terrorism while striving to build a future.
When asked by their teacher what they would like to sculpt from clay, the children eagerly respond: “A tank,” “A gun,” only to be gently corrected: “No, we’re removing war objects—let’s create something from our everyday life.” Meanwhile, the camera pans to reveal Cameroonian soldiers, masked and stationed at every street corner, their weapons trained on an unseen threat.
