The Republican Police in Bénin delivered a significant blow to urban criminal networks this week, executing a large-scale operation in Cotonou’s Vodjè district.

This targeted intervention resulted in the complete dismantling of a notorious urban hub, which had been secretly harboring a network for trafficking Indian hemp. Initial findings indicate that this location served as both a strategic transit point and a place for drug consumption for users.
The raid led to the apprehension of multiple individuals at the site, alongside the confiscation of substantial materials directly linked to the illicit trade. Investigations are vigorously continuing to identify and apprehend all involved parties and branches of this criminal enterprise.
A network allegedly supported by a military officer?
The case has taken a particularly serious turn with the Republican Police now actively pursuing a member of the Béninese armed forces. This military agent, known by the alias « Alòtrò » (a local reference to a gecko), is considered a central figure in the investigation, suspected of direct complicity with the trafficking rings.
Intelligence gathered by security services suggests the soldier did not frequent the illicit hub for personal drug consumption. Instead, he allegedly operated a well-organized protection racket, regularly extorting payments from the dealers.
In exchange for these illicit commissions, the military officer reportedly offered false assurances of protection and immunity from police raids, thereby betraying his sworn duty.
