Fenerbahçe secures greenwood transfer from marseille for record fee

Istanbul-based football club Fenerbahçe has finalized an agreement with Olympique de Marseille for the transfer of English striker Mason Greenwood, marking one of the most significant deals in French football history. The move, valued at €42 million, includes a base fee of €40 million with an additional €2 million in performance-based incentives.

The transfer sees Greenwood leave Ligue 1 after just two seasons, where he amassed an impressive tally of 48 goals and 17 assists across 81 competitive appearances. His departure from Marseille will also set a new benchmark for the club’s outgoing transfer fees, surpassing the previous record of €39 million paid by Chelsea for Michy Batshuayi in 2016.

Why marseille opted for Fenerbahçe’s offer

Despite receiving higher financial proposals from both Atlético Madrid and a Saudi Pro League club, Greenwood personally favored the Turkish Super Lig. Fenerbahçe’s willingness to meet his contract demands—including a reported annual salary of €10 million—proved decisive in securing the deal.

The French side, operating under strict financial constraints, was compelled to monetize its star asset to stabilize its balance sheet. Greenwood’s exit, originally slated to run until 2029, accelerates Marseille’s rebuilding phase while fulfilling the club’s immediate financial objectives.

greenwood set for four-year deal in Turkey

Under the terms of the agreement, Greenwood will join Fenerbahçe on a four-year contract, providing the Istanbul outfit with an immediate attacking upgrade. The move aligns with head coach Ismail Kartal’s broader squad overhaul, which also includes the arrivals of defenders like Nathan Aké and striker Vedat Muriqi.

Fenerbahçe enters the new season with heightened ambitions, aiming to challenge Galatasaray’s four-year stranglehold on the Turkish Super Lig. Greenwood’s integration into the team will be critical, as the club seeks to balance domestic dominance with competitive performances in European competitions.

The striker’s arrival not only strengthens Fenerbahçe’s attacking options but also signals the club’s commitment to securing top-tier talent to compete at the highest levels of Turkish football.
