France and Morocco deepen strategic partnership with new agreements
High-level diplomacy
During an official visit to Rabat, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu underscored the importance of elevating the long-standing ties between France and Morocco. A landmark moment in bilateral relations, the visit is set to culminate in the signing of approximately fifteen cooperation agreements aimed at solidifying the partnership forged in 2024.
Partnership poised for a « quantum leap »
Kicking off the 15th High-Level Meeting between France and Morocco, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu hailed the occasion as a « pivotal moment » in the bilateral relationship. He called for a « quantum leap » in cooperation, particularly in security, counterterrorism, and joint initiatives across Africa. Morocco’s Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, echoed this sentiment, stressing the urgency of « expediting the implementation of commitments » made under the exceptional strengthened partnership signed in 2024.
Fifteen agreements to reshape bilateral ties
The two governments are set to finalize around fifteen agreements spanning economic, security, migration, cultural, and defense sectors. Key initiatives include the establishment of a Regional Express Rail (RER) line in Rabat, defense industry partnerships, and new cultural collaborations. The visit may also lay the groundwork for a future state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, potentially culminating in the signing of an unprecedented « friendship treaty » proposed by Lecornu.
Strengthening bonds amid controversy
This diplomatic engagement follows a period of stabilized relations between Paris and Rabat since France’s 2024 recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. However, the visit unfolds against the backdrop of fresh allegations from a media consortium regarding Morocco’s alleged use of the Pegasus spyware. Neither the French government nor the Quai d’Orsay commented on these claims, reaffirming their commitment to advancing the partnership with Morocco.
