Jihadists target local leader in tonka, northern Mali

In the heart of the Tombouctou region, the town of Tonka has once again become the scene of a brutal targeted killing, this time claiming the life of a respected local figure known for his community ties.

The victim, identified as Abdoulaye Tandina—fondly nicknamed Badou « Wayé », meaning « the butcher » in Songhai, or simply Abba by the children he often treated with kindness—was a longtime resident of Tonka. For over four decades, he worked as a butcher, a profession deeply rooted in his family’s legacy from Tombouctou, where his ancestors plied the same trade.

On Monday evening, as dusk settled over the market square where he sold his meat, armed assailants approached him. They dragged him away and executed him along a nearby roadside, leaving behind a community in shock and mourning.

Abdoulaye Tandina’s daughter, who runs a shop in Tombouctou, remains inconsolable, according to a close relative who spoke on condition of anonymity. The loss has sent ripples of grief through the town, where he was once a prominent figure, even serving as the head of Tonka’s butchers’ guild—though some sources suggest he had stepped away from that role in recent years.

What baffles locals is the motive behind his killing. Unlike previous victims of such targeted attacks, Abdoulaye Tandina was not known for expressing political views or affiliations. His family insists he kept to himself, focusing on his work and community relationships. One relative even revealed a surprising connection: Tandina was a cousin of the current head of Tombouctou’s special delegation, the interim municipal body operating in the absence of elections. Yet, even this link fails to provide a clear explanation for his targeting.

a pattern of violence in tonka

This tragic incident marks the fourth targeted assassination in Tonka within the past eight months. In late March, a youth association leader was killed, followed by the murder of a Quranic teacher in June. The most high-profile case occurred in November 2025, when Mariam Cissé, a young TikToker known for her public support of the Malian military, was publicly executed. Her death sparked national outrage and highlighted the growing insecurity plaguing the region.

Despite repeated inquiries, neither local authorities in Tombouctou nor military officials have provided any comment or clarification regarding these killings or the ongoing threat posed by armed groups in the area.
