Kemi seba South Africa court delay due to power failure

An unexpected infrastructure glitch derailed judicial proceedings in South Africa, delaying a critical hearing for activist Kémi Séba. The Pretoria court session, scheduled to review his detention status and extradition request to the Bénin, was abruptly postponed after a power outage struck the prison facility where he is held.

The blackout disrupted standard security protocols, preventing prison authorities from securely escorting Séba to the courtroom. Without the ability to move him safely or set up a reliable video link—both compromised by the lack of electricity—the presiding judge had no choice but to postpone the hearing.

Technical hurdles stall legal process

This incident highlights the vulnerability of South Africa’s penal system to utility disruptions. Frequent load shedding across the country’s detention centers can disable automated gates, biometric verification systems, and other essential security measures required for inmate transfers. In Séba’s case, the absence of stable power meant the justice system couldn’t proceed—underscoring how even basic infrastructure failures can stall complex legal matters.

Pending decisions loom over delayed hearing

The postponement leaves several key matters unresolved. Séba remains in custody as authorities reschedule the court appearance. Meanwhile, two pivotal decisions hang in the balance:

  • Extradition request: The court had yet to rule on the claim filed by the Bénin’s Commission for the Restitution of Illicitly Acquired Wealth (CRIET), seeking Séba’s return to face charges.
  • Political asylum appeal: Séba’s legal team continues to pursue his bid for political asylum in South Africa, a process now delayed further.

The tribunal has provisionally set a new hearing date for September 23, 2026, though no guarantees exist that external factors—like power supply reliability—won’t interfere again.
