Lansana Gagny Sakho criticizes Ousmane Sonko’s stance on republic institutions

In a recent television appearance, Lansana Gagny Sakho, Chairman of the Board of Directors of APIX, provided his perspective on the political rift that unfolded between him and Ousmane Sonko. While defending his unwavering commitment to the country’s republican institutions, he shared insights into why he distanced himself from the Pastef leader.

The former ally of Sonko explained that his initial alignment with Pastef’s political vision stemmed from admiration for its key figures. However, after Senegal’s political transition, he declined an offer to lead the Ministry of Water and Sanitation, prioritizing his principles over a position of power. “I refused to place institutional roles above my core beliefs. That decision allowed me to leave with integrity. From the beginning, I chose the Republic.”

Sonko’s stance on republican values questioned

Speaking critically about Ousmane Sonko’s approach, Sakho argued that the opposition leader never truly embraced the Republic. He pointed to public statements made by Sonko during President Diomaye Faye’s official visits to the United States and China, where Sonko publicly criticized a perceived lack of authority in the government. These remarks, in Sakho’s view, undermined the credibility of the head of state and deepened divisions within the administration.

Reconciling political differences for institutional stability

For Sakho, the essence of political engagement lies in strengthening state institutions and ensuring their smooth operation. Though acknowledging challenges on both sides of the political spectrum, he highlighted significant progress—particularly in the justice sector—as evidence of positive change. He also addressed recent shifts at the Ministry of Justice, noting that the former minister, Ousmane Diagne, had declared his independence from external influence before the National Assembly. Sakho dismissed claims that the minister’s replacement was an attempt to manipulate the judiciary, asserting that magistrates remain autonomous actors rather than puppets.

Support for President Faye’s leadership amid party departures

Sakho has consistently voiced his support for President Diomaye Faye’s policies, emphasizing the importance of state continuity and institutional stability. His latest remarks follow a wave of resignations within Pastef, as several party members have recently switched allegiance to the presidential camp ahead of the launch of the Kiiraay party.
