Lansana Gagny Sakho clarifies stance on Sonko and republican institutions

During a recent appearance on a national morning show, Lansana Gagny Sakho, Chair of the Board of Directors of the APIX, addressed his evolving relationship with political figures and his unwavering commitment to the Republic. His remarks shed light on a decision rooted in principle rather than political expediency.

From political alignment to institutional loyalty

Lansana Gagny Sakho recounted his initial support for the political project led by Pastef, driven by the individuals at its helm. However, the transition of power marked a turning point. When offered a key ministerial position in the water and sanitation sector, he declined, prioritizing his core values over career advancement. “I refused to let positions overshadow my principles,” he stated. “This stance allowed me to step away without hesitation. From the outset, I chose the Republic.”

Sonko’s stance questioned

In stark contrast, Lansana Gagny Sakho expressed reservations about Ousmane Sonko’s commitment to republican values. He pointed to public statements made during President Faye’s official visits abroad—particularly in the United States and China—as evidence of disloyalty. These remarks, he argued, undermined the authority of the head of state and deepened divisions within the government.

The former ally of the Pastef leader emphasized that true political choice lies in strengthening institutions and enhancing state efficiency. While acknowledging challenges on both sides, he highlighted significant progress, particularly in the justice sector.

The justice ministry reshuffle: a test of resilience

Lansana Gagny Sakho also addressed the recent changes at the Ministry of Justice. He recalled the former Minister, Ousmane Diagne, asserting his independence before parliament, declaring that no one could manipulate him. According to Sakho, the reshuffle aimed to install a more compliant leader to influence judicial decisions. “That assumption overlooked a fundamental reality: magistrates are not puppets,” he remarked. “The dynamics of power are far more complex than opposition perspectives suggest.”

His comments come amid a wave of resignations within Pastef, as several party cadres defect to the presidential camp ahead of the launch of the Kiiraay party. Lansana Gagny Sakho has consistently voiced his support for President Diomaye Faye’s policies, underscoring the importance of institutional continuity and stability.
