After nearly two years at the helm, Belgian football coach Tom Saintfiet has officially stepped down from his role as head coach of the Mali national team. His announcement came in the midst of escalating political and security challenges gripping the country, marked by intensified jihadist offensives and armed clashes involving Tuareg rebels.
« Today marks the conclusion of my mission as head coach of the Mali national team A. I leave with pride and dedication, despite the many obstacles we faced », Saintfiet shared in a heartfelt statement posted on his Facebook page on April 27, 2026.
In his farewell message, he extended his deepest sympathies to the people of Mali, emphasizing the unifying power of football as a force for peace and hope. « In these trying times, I stand in solidarity with the Malian people. Football is more than a game—it’s a beacon of unity and resilience », he added.
Saintfiet’s legacy: resilience and competitive spirit
During his tenure, which began in August 2024, Tom Saintfiet steered the Aigles du Mali through a challenging World Cup qualifying campaign. Despite a difficult start, the team achieved commendable results, suffering only two losses in 17 matches. One of the most notable setbacks occurred in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations quarterfinals, where Mali was narrowly defeated by the Sénégal national team (1-0).
The Belgian coach had previously been linked to the Ghana national team coaching position before ultimately losing out to Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz. In recognition of his contributions, the Malian Football Federation (FMF), represented by President Mahazou dit Baba Cissé, publicly acknowledged Saintfiet’s efforts and initiated a search for his replacement to ensure continuity for the team.
« We sincerely thank Tom Saintfiet for his commitment and wish him every success in his future endeavors. May peace and stability return to our nation—Go, Eagles! »
