Malian forces regain control in key battle zones against armed groups

The Malian Armed Forces (FAMA) have declared that they have successfully regained the upper hand in all conflict zones targeted by the Azawad Liberation Front in the northern regions and the Support Group for Islam and Muslims, an Al-Qaeda-affiliated faction, in central and southern Mali.

Continued clashes in Anifif test military resolve

In a detailed statement, the FAMA reported intense fighting in Anifif, located in the northeast at roughly 110 kilometers south of Kidal, following the arrival of additional fighters and equipment for the Azawad Liberation Front. The army highlighted that its soldiers demonstrated unwavering determination and discipline throughout the day’s engagements.

« The Malian Armed Forces remain fully confident in their capacity to safeguard national unity, protect civilians, and dismantle enemy forces, » the communiqué emphasized.

Claims and counterclaims on the ground

The Azawad Liberation Front’s spokesperson, Mohamed Mouloud Ramadan, had previously asserted control over Anifif following renewed hostilities. He also refuted rumors of the death of the group’s leader, Mbarek Ag Akli, and confirmed that the commander continues to oversee military operations across northern Mali.
