Mauritania seeks Gabon’s backing for oif leadership role

Gabon’s Head of State, Oligui Nguema, recently welcomed Messouda Bahama Mohamed Laghdaf, Mauritania’s Minister of Environment and Sustainable Development. The minister delivered an official message from His Excellency Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, President of the Islamic Republic of Mauritania, and formally presented Mauritania’s candidacy for the position of Secretary-General of the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF).

This significant bid, championed by Dr. Koumba BA, outlines a strategic project centered on three fundamental pillars: coherence, balance, and direct benefit to member states. The high-level meeting also served to highlight the excellent and smooth diplomatic relations flourishing between Libreville and Nouakchott. During their exchange, the special envoy emphasized Mauritania’s firm commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation with Gabon, a partnership historically rooted in solidarity, mutual respect, and ongoing dialogue on matters of common interest.

Minister Laghdaf seized this opportune moment to officially advocate for Mauritania’s aspiration to lead the International Organisation of La Francophonie (OIF) as its next Secretary-General.

In response, Gabon’s Head of State reiterated his unwavering dedication to the principles of consensus and collaborative governance, which are cornerstones of his political engagement on the African continent. This encounter fully embodies the President’s strategic vision and underscores Gabon’s commitment to proactive diplomacy.

It further demonstrates the nation’s resolve to diversify its African partnerships while reaffirming its steadfast support for a practical, dynamic Francophonie that is resolutely geared towards co-development.
