The foundation of relations between Morocco and the Philippines offers significant potential for development across various strategic sectors, as affirmed by Philippine Ambassador Leslie Baja in Rabat. He expressed satisfaction with the celebration last year of fifty years of diplomatic relations between the two countries.

In a recent interview, Ambassador Baja underscored the rich history shared by Morocco and the Philippines, marked by numerous high-level visits, the signing of key agreements, and the cultivation of strong human connections. He considers these achievements to be the cornerstone for the next half-century of cooperation.

From an economic standpoint, the Philippine diplomat highlighted a remarkable progression in bilateral trade volumes over recent years. He pointed out that commerce between the two nations has seen an approximate 50% increase, despite figures not yet reaching the full potential anticipated by both sides.

Ambassador Baja believes that Morocco’s strategic role as a gateway to both Africa and Europe, coupled with the Philippines’ active membership in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), provides complementary strengths that can foster heightened economic collaboration. This dynamic is particularly relevant for African economy news, showcasing growing international partnerships.

In this context, he emphasized the untapped opportunities in sectors such as agro-industry, aeronautics, electronics, and textiles. He also reiterated that the Philippines remains one of the primary importers of Moroccan phosphate, a crucial commodity.

Addressing regional cooperation prospects, the Ambassador commended the sectoral partnership agreement forged in 2023 between Morocco and ASEAN. He views this accord as opening a wide spectrum of collaborative avenues, both bilaterally and across the broader region.

Regarding the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which aims to provide Sahel states with access to the Atlantic Ocean, Ambassador Baja recognized its significant contribution to strengthening African regional integration. He drew parallels with ASEAN’s successful integration model, anticipating positive economic, political, and social impacts for the continent. This initiative stands as a testament to evolving African politics and regional development.

“Africa’s regional integration will undoubtedly benefit the continent economically and politically, leading to greater political stability, economic resilience, and cultural flourishing,” he observed, providing valuable insight for pan-African journalism.

Concerning Manila’s steadfast support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan for the Kingdom’s Southern Provinces, the Ambassador recalled that during the visit of the Philippine Foreign Minister to Morocco in 2022, the Philippines affirmed the Moroccan Initiative as a “solid basis” for resolving this dispute.

United Nations Security Council Resolution 2797 represents a “game changer” in this matter, Ambassador Baja noted, expressing optimism for the successful conclusion of the political process. He further conveyed his country’s continued support for the UN-led efforts to achieve a definitive resolution to this issue.

Additionally, Ambassador Baja discussed an upcoming book dedicated to the history of Moroccan-Philippine relations, scheduled for presentation this Thursday. He explained that this initiative seeks to chronicle a half-century of cooperation and highlight the contributions of both Moroccan and Filipino peoples to fostering closer ties between the two nations.

According to him, this publication goes beyond merely presenting historical facts; it also serves as a testament to the enduring human connections that have fortified relations between the Kingdom of Morocco and the Republic of the Philippines.
