The Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l’éthique et la fraternité (Pastef) is set to hold its first national elective congress on June 6 and 7, 2026, in Dakar. The primary objective of this gathering is to elect the party’s president. Ahead of the event, the party’s High Authority for Regulation (HARP) released the list of approved candidates this past Friday, May 22.
As anticipated, incumbent Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko stands as the sole candidate for his own succession. Meanwhile, the applications of seven individuals were deemed inadmissible. According to HARP, the rejected dossiers either lacked essential documents—such as identification or membership cards—or contained irreparable irregularities that could not be addressed after the submission deadline of May 20.
Under Sonko’s leadership, the congress will also chart the party’s political roadmap for the coming years, coinciding with upcoming electoral milestones in 2027 (local elections) and 2029 (presidential election). This gathering underscores the party’s commitment to democratic processes and forward-looking governance as Senegal navigates its political future.
