Tchad to host major african water forum in 2026

N’Djamena, Chad – The African Water Forum 2026 will take center stage in Chad’s capital on July 15 and 16, 2027, bringing together global leaders, policymakers, and water experts to address the continent’s most pressing hydrological challenges.

The upcoming forum, themed From Vision to Action, was unveiled in a high-profile press briefing led by the country’s Minister of Finance, Budget, Economy, Planning, and International Cooperation. The announcement underscores Chad’s pivotal role in shaping Africa’s water security agenda.

In his address, the minister highlighted Chad’s vast water resources, including the iconic Lake Chad, major rivers like the Chari and Logone, and other critical basins such as the Fitri, Léré, Iro, Bahr Aouk, Batha, and Bitéha. He also emphasized the shared Nubian Sandstone Aquifer and cross-border watersheds that sustain neighboring regions.

Chad’s water challenges and continental leadership

« As a Sahelian nation, we face the dual pressures of climate change and rapid population growth, » the minister stated. « Yet, we are determined to turn these challenges into opportunities by hosting a platform where Africa’s water future is reimagined. »

Chad’s commitment to water security extends beyond rhetoric. The government outlined a multi-pronged strategy to:

  • Expand access to clean drinking water and sanitation for marginalized communities
  • Boost agricultural irrigation to safeguard food production
  • Implement sustainable management of transboundary water sources

The forum’s objectives align with Chad’s national development priorities, particularly the Water Forward initiative, which champions water as a cornerstone for human prosperity, agricultural productivity, and environmental sustainability. This approach mirrors the President’s broader vision for inclusive growth.

partnerships and long-term impact

The minister also confirmed the Bank’s renewed support through a new project in development, reinforcing Chad’s partnership with the World Bank. « Collaboration is key to unlocking Africa’s water potential, » he noted. « This forum will not only foster dialogue but also catalyze actionable commitments from participating nations. »

Expected outcomes include national water compacts and accountability frameworks to ensure sustained progress. With its strategic water infrastructure and proactive policies, Chad is poised to lead Africa’s transformation toward resilient, water-secure communities.
