After a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, Saint-Étienne secured a dramatic 7-6 victory over Rodez to book a spot in the Ligue 1 promotion playoff. The match ended 0-0 following regulation time, forcing the shootout at Geoffroy-Guichard Stadium, where goalkeeper Brice Maubleu emerged as the hero with four decisive saves.

This win marks a significant milestone for the Verts just one year after their relegation, offering them a chance to reclaim their place in France’s top flight. The identity of their playoff opponent, the 16th-placed Ligue 1 team, will be determined by the conclusion of the 34th matchday.

a high-stakes shootout at the chateau

The penalty shootout proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions. Maubleu, who had initially missed his own attempt, bounced back with a series of stunning stops to deny Rodez’s players and secure the win. His heroics followed a tactical decision by manager Philippe Montanier, who replaced Gautier Larsonneur with the specialist Maubleu just before the shootout.

Maubleu’s post-match remarks highlighted the pressure and tension: “I had the chance to win it in the shootout but missed. Still, I knew I had to step up and stop them—and Mika Nadé finished the job.”

rodez’s unbeaten streak ends in stéphanois heartbreak

Rodez had arrived at Geoffroy-Guichard in strong form, riding a 21-match unbeaten streak. However, Saint-Étienne held firm, with Wilitty Younoussa coming closest to scoring when his shot rattled the crossbar. The visitors squandered two golden opportunities in the 81st minute, leaving the door ajar for the home side to turn the tide in the shootout.

a familiar playoff script

This victory echoes Saint-Étienne’s playoff triumph in 2024, when they defeated Metz to earn promotion back to Ligue 1. Though they were relegated the following season, the Verts now have another shot at redemption. Their playoff opponent, yet to be determined, will face a daunting task at Geoffroy-Guichard, a venue renowned for its electrifying atmosphere.

The stakes are clear: one more step stands between Saint-Étienne and a return to the elite.
