In a bold move that has intensified political tensions in Dakar, Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef party, has sharply criticized a legal challenge filed against his reinstatement as a member of parliament. The opposition’s decision to refer the matter to the Constitutional Council has triggered a sharp response from the former Prime Minister, who dismisses the move as a politically motivated maneuver.
Speaking to reporters, Ousmane Sonko accused his adversaries of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at blocking his political ambitions. “They are engaged in underhanded schemes and political conspiracies,” he stated. “The referral to the Constitutional Council is just another tactic in their playbook. Those behind this legal challenge knew full well that this issue falls outside the Council’s jurisdiction.”
Beyond the legal maneuver, Sonko warned that the misuse of state institutions for political ends would not go unanswered. “If they choose to wield the authority of the state against us, we will defend ourselves using every legal avenue provided by the Constitution,” he declared, underscoring a commitment to constitutional principles amid escalating political rivalries.
The controversy stems from a decision made by the National Assembly Bureau on May 24 to reinstate Ousmane Sonko as a deputy. This decision has now become the focal point of a dispute initiated by opposition lawmakers and independent members, who argue that his parliamentary eligibility was compromised. Their argument hinges on Article 54 of the Constitution, which prohibits certain public officials from holding dual mandates. They contend that Sonko, who served as Prime Minister before being elected to parliament in 2024, was ineligible to run for office due to his prior position.
The opposition’s petition, filed on June 1, seeks to overturn the Assembly’s decision, arguing that it violates constitutional provisions. The legal battle now shifts to the Constitutional Council, which will weigh the arguments and determine whether Sonko’s reinstatement complies with the law.
