The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, publicly challenged the President’s handling of political funds during a parliamentary session on Friday, May 22, 2026. Addressing lawmakers in a heated exchange, he declared his disagreement over the matter, calling the President’s approach a « miscalculation ».
Speaking under the scrutiny of the National Assembly, Sonko made it clear that he does not share the President’s position. « I disagree entirely with the approach taken on this sensitive issue, » he stated, while expressing hope for a reassessment by the executive branch.
Long-standing demands for transparency
The Prime Minister emphasized that his party has long advocated for stricter oversight of political funds. « As far back as 2014, our movement has pushed for accountability in this area. Our 2019 manifesto included these demands, and by 2024, the situation remains unchanged, » he noted.
He clarified that his objection is not about abolishing these special funds entirely but rather ensuring they are subject to independent monitoring, drawing inspiration from systems like those in France. « We never called for the elimination of these funds—only for proper controls to be put in place, » he explained.
Rejecting misinformation and defending governance
Addressing concerns about a potential shift of these resources to the Prime Minister’s office, Sonko dismissed such claims outright. He pointed out that his administration already manages a fund exceeding one billion CFA francs, adding that the real issue lies in public trust.
« Many Senegalese believe these funds are used to buy political support, » he said, stressing that « every franc must be accounted for without exception. »
