Just days after Ousmane Sonko was removed as Prime Minister in Senegal, sharp divisions have emerged between the opposition leader and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Despite initial negotiations to include members of the Pastef-Les Patriotes party in the new government, talks collapsed. In an official statement released on June 1st by Pastef’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page, the party firmly declared that none of its officials would join the upcoming cabinet.
The communiqué emphasized that multiple discussions had taken place between Pastef leaders and the Head of State in recent days to reach a consensus on government composition. The party stressed it acted « in a spirit of responsibility » and in line with its governing bodies’ directives. A lengthy meeting between Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Ousmane Sonko on the morning of June 1st revealed some areas of agreement, yet fundamental disagreements remained over the role of the majority within the executive structure.
Persistent governance disputes stall government formation
Following the meeting, Pastef’s COMEX reviewed the situation and proposed new terms to the President. However, these were not accepted. As a result, the party has withdrawn entirely from the government formation process. « Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government or be represented by any minister », the statement declared.
This decision carries significant implications for Senegal’s political balance, especially as citizens face pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Pastef extended « full success to the new team », signaling its intention to continue its work from the National Assembly, where Ousmane Sonko now serves as President. The coming days will reveal the true impact of this political shift at the highest level of Senegal’s government.
