Senegal politics: minister slams sonko over touba money laundering claims

Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye responds to Ousmane Sonko’s remarks on Touba

The recent statements made by Ousmane Sonko during his visit to Touba have sparked a wave of reactions across Senegal’s political landscape. Transport Minister Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye has strongly criticized the Pastef leader’s allegations, which claimed that “stolen money” had been channeled into the holy city.

In a public statement, the minister condemned the remarks, calling them a direct assault on the dignity of Touba and its residents. “Drawing parallels between Touba and a hub for dirty money is not just disrespectful—it is a grave insult to the sacred city, its people, and the guiding principles of Mouridism,” he declared.

“A fundamental misunderstanding of Touba’s spiritual legacy”

According to Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye, Sonko’s comments reflect a severe misjudgment of Touba’s history and spiritual significance. “Only someone profoundly ignorant of Touba’s heritage could equate its residents with money launderers,” he asserted.

The minister emphasized that the citizens of Touba are widely respected for their unwavering commitment to the teachings of Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba and the core values of dignity, hard work, and integrity that define Mouridism. “The people of Touba are known for their moral strength and adherence to Serigne Touba’s principles. To suggest otherwise is a profound misrepresentation,” he stressed. He also pointed out that the absence of key religious and local leaders during Sonko’s visit may signal broader disapproval of his approach.

Beyond addressing the controversy, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye took the opportunity to praise President Bassirou Diomaye Faye’s dedication to Touba. He highlighted that the Head of State prioritizes the concerns of the holy city’s residents, stating, “The President holds Touba and its people in high regard. He is actively working to address their needs with concrete solutions.”

The minister also voiced his support for Prime Minister Mouhamadou Al Amine Lo, affirming that under the President’s guidance, the Prime Minister is expediting the resolution of long-standing issues inherited from previous administrations.

While acknowledging the ongoing debate, Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye urged political figures to shift their focus toward national priorities rather than divisive rhetoric. “Senegal needs cohesion and unity more than ever to tackle its economic and social challenges,” he emphasized. Reaffirming his confidence in President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, he described the leader as “a man of integrity, deeply devoted to his country and committed to serving the nation.” He concluded by stating, “His sole focus is Senegal. Despite relentless attacks and attempts to undermine him, he remains steadfast in his mission: fulfilling the expectations of the Senegalese people and steering the nation toward progress and prosperity.”
