Senegal’s democracy pioneer abdoulaye wade turns 100 as sonko pays tribute

Senegal’s democracy pioneer Abdoulaye Wade celebrates 100th birthday with heartfelt tribute

Dakar — As Senegal marks a historic milestone, the nation reflects on the remarkable life of former President Abdoulaye Wade, who reaches his centennial birthday today. Ousmane Sonko, President of the National Assembly and leader of the Pastef party, seized the moment to pay homage to a man he describes as a towering figure in the country’s political landscape.

In a poignant message shared on social media platform X, Sonko captured the essence of Wade’s legacy with a simple yet powerful phrase: “A century of meaningful life.” The tribute unfolded against the backdrop of Tabaski celebrations, which limited formal national commemorations, yet Sonko emphasized that the true homage emerged from the hearts of millions of Senegalese through silent prayers and affectionate reflections.

The National Assembly leader traced Wade’s pivotal role in shaping Senegal’s democratic foundations. He highlighted the former president’s decades-long political journey, from his election to the National Assembly in 1978 to the historic political transition of March 2000, which marked the country’s first peaceful transfer of power.

“Abdoulaye Wade stands as one of the most illustrious architects of Senegalese democracy,” Sonko declared, underscoring the depth of Wade’s contributions. He also reflected on the personal bonds between the two leaders, recalling moments of magnanimity and trust extended by Wade in 2017 and 2019.

“The President’s legacy is not merely one of power, but of trust—a rare and precious gift bestowed by great leaders,” Sonko remarked. His tribute extended beyond formal recognition, as he affectionately referred to Wade as ‘his grandfather,’ offering prayers for the centenarian’s well-being while wishing for Senegal’s continued progress.

Sonko’s words echoed a sentiment shared across the nation: a celebration of Wade’s life as a testament to resilience, vision, and unwavering commitment to Senegal’s democratic ideals.
