In Bamako, two young men lost their lives in a violent confrontation with military personnel near the headquarters of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM). The incident unfolded before dawn on a recent Thursday, around 5:30 a.m., in a district known for its heightened security measures.
The tragedy began when two individuals on a motorcycle allegedly attempted to breach the security barricades protecting the ORTM premises. Military officials claim the men ignored warning shots fired by guards at the first checkpoint. However, conflicting accounts suggest the victims were seasonal workers heading to their construction site.
Residents of Bamako are divided over the military’s response. Some argue that the soldiers acted within their rights, given the volatile security climate. Others question whether lethal force was necessary, especially since the circumstances remain unclear.
heightened security measures in the capital
Security checkpoints were reinforced around the ORTM area earlier this month, coinciding with intense clashes between Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) and militants from the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM). The extremist group had launched simultaneous attacks in seven locations, including Bamako.
According to military sources, the two men not only breached the first checkpoint but also failed to heed warning shots before being fatally shot. Eyewitness accounts, however, paint a different picture. A local driver, speaking on condition of anonymity, emphasized the risks of unauthorized movement in restricted zones.
« Everyone knows these areas are off-limits without clearance, especially during heightened alert periods. If alarms sound, stopping is the only safe option. The soldiers were justified in their actions. »
questions linger over the fatal encounter
Not everyone agrees. Seyba, another resident of Bamako, believes the outcome could have been different. He suggests that instead of lethal force, the soldiers could have targeted the motorcycle or wounded the men to gain information.
« Taking lives without answers leaves too many unanswered questions. Even if they were suspected militants, now we’ll never know what truly happened. »
Local testimonies indicate the victims were indeed seasonal laborers heading to their worksite. Their actions may have stemmed from a lack of awareness regarding the strict protocols in place.
In response to the incident, security around the ORTM has been further tightened. Similar measures have been implemented at military camps throughout the capital, as well as at Bamako-Sénou International Airport, which now enforces restricted access for travelers and authorized personnel only.
