At a packed rally in Sadio, Diourbel region, PASTEF-Les Patriotes leader Ousmane Sonko delivered a sharp critique of Senegal’s current leadership, questioning the direction taken since the 2024 presidential election.
From campaign promise to policy drift
The fiery address highlighted what Sonko described as a widening gap between campaign rhetoric and governance reality under President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. He reminded supporters that he had spearheaded Faye’s candidacy after his own disqualification, framing the move as a collective push for change.
« We lifted him to the highest office, yet he has strayed far from the vision we fought for—leaving the people’s hopes unfulfilled, » Sonko declared to a roaring crowd. His remarks underscored a growing unease over policy reversals and missed commitments that once energized Senegal’s political landscape.
Defending his legacy, eyeing the future
Sonko framed his political journey as instrumental in securing the 2024 transition, asserting that the momentum for change originated with PASTEF’s grassroots movement. « The fight for Senegal’s renewal began with us, » he stated, positioning himself as the movement’s authentic voice.
Looking ahead, he framed the 2026 and 2029 elections as pivotal moments to reclaim the original project of PASTEF, urging supporters to stay vigilant. While he stopped short of direct confrontation, his words hinted at deeper tensions within the ruling alliance, raising questions about unity within the governing coalition.
The speech came at a time when public skepticism about the administration’s trajectory is rising, though no official response has been issued from the presidency.
