Togo: why opposition coalition’s akassimé rally fell flat

Despite robust promotional efforts, the much-anticipated gathering organized by the CNCC (Cadre National de Concertation pour le Changement) failed to draw significant crowds. Held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at the Akassimé field in Lomé, the event attracted only a handful of supporters instead of the expected sea of participants.

The rally, scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM, saw minimal turnout even an hour later. Observers attribute this tepid response to a growing disillusionment with traditional protest methods. Citizens now prioritize tangible solutions to pressing daily challenges—such as job opportunities, access to clean water, and the Assurance Maladie Universelle (AMU)—over political slogans.

Leading figures of the coalition, including several deputies in the National Assembly, struggled to energize the crowd. This disconnect between institutional representation and grassroots expectations raises questions about the movement’s strategic coherence. Critics argue that the rhetoric, often perceived as overly alarmist, no longer aligns with the electorate’s demand for constructive, solution-oriented discourse.

Despite rebranding from CRAC to CNCC, the opposition has struggled to regain momentum. Many perceive the name change as superficial, failing to address the underlying issues that resonate with the public. On the ground, the event resembled a modest neighborhood gathering rather than a pivotal political forum capable of shaping national policy.

To rebuild credibility, the opposition must critically assess its tactics. The widespread rejection of outdated protest narratives signals a clear shift in public expectations—citizens now seek direct contributions to the country’s development. The long-term viability of these political formations hinges on their ability to move beyond fleeting mobilizations and offer viable, actionable alternatives.
