Morocco’s King receives US backing in Western Sahara sovereignty stance
On the 27th anniversary of Morocco’s Throne Day, King Mohammed VI received a message from United States President Donald Trump reaffirming America’s recognition of Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. The US leader also reiterated unwavering support for Rabat’s autonomy plan as the sole viable path to resolving the long-standing territorial dispute.
«The United States is unequivocal: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and endorse its autonomy proposal as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a just and lasting solution,» Trump stated in the message to the Moroccan monarch.
He emphasized that alternative approaches «only prolong the status quo,» calling them «unacceptable.» «This dispute must end now, and the United States will continue to drive progress toward that goal,» he asserted.
In his congratulatory note to King Mohammed VI and the Moroccan people, Trump highlighted the «250-year history of American friendship with Morocco,» describing the alliance as «built on trust and mutual respect.»
The US president praised the Moroccan monarch’s «wise leadership,» hailing him as «a pillar of stability» and underscoring Morocco’s «consistent commitment to peace, countering extremism, and safeguarding the security of both American and Moroccan citizens.» He specifically noted Morocco’s pivotal role in the Abraham Accords as a testament to the value of the partnership. «To this end, we will also work together to ensure regional security across the Sahel,» he added.
On the economic front, Trump directed his administration to pursue «economic and social development initiatives with Morocco, including in the Western Sahara territory.» He cited key sectors such as technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as focal points for strategic collaboration.
«Together, we will forge a new era,» Trump concluded, urging a relationship prioritizing the interests of both nations.
