Bénin and Niger move closer to reopening shared border

Bilateral relations between Bénin and Niger have strengthened with the announcement of a new joint initiative. Following a working visit to Niamey by Bénin’s President Romuald Wadagni on June 2, 2026, both nations have agreed to form an expert committee tasked with evaluating and addressing the conditions needed to reopen their shared border.

The decision was formalized in a joint statement issued after high-level talks between President Wadagni and Niger’s transitional leader, Abdourahamane Tiani. The committee has been given a strict 15-day deadline to assess existing obstacles and recommend concrete measures to resolve them.

Strengthening regional partnership and security

During the cordial discussions, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation across key areas, including regional security, economic integration, and cross-border collaboration. They highlighted the long-standing historical and cultural ties uniting the two countries, emphasizing their shared goals of peace, stability, and sustainable development for their people.

President Wadagni and President Tiani also stressed the importance of revitalizing existing bilateral mechanisms, including the regular meetings of the Niger-Bénin Joint Cooperation Commission, to ensure sustained dialogue and progress.

Border closure and the path to normalization

The issue of border closure, imposed in the aftermath of regional tensions following events on July 26, 2023, remains a critical concern for both economies. The closure has significantly impacted trade flows and the free movement of people, disrupting daily life and commerce along the frontier.

The establishment of the expert committee signals a strong political will in both capitals to restore normal relations. Within two weeks, the committee’s findings are expected to guide the governments in determining the practical steps required to reopen the border safely and efficiently.

Invitation to Niamey signals new chapter

At the end of the visit, President Wadagni extended a formal invitation to President Tiani to undertake an official state visit to Bénin. This gesture underscores the mutual desire to foster deeper trust and collaboration, signaling a new chapter in bilateral relations grounded in cooperation and mutual respect.
