Benin political dynamics: LD party stays in opposition as FCBE shifts allegiance

Bénin’s LD Party Remains in Opposition as FCBE Joins Government Camp

The Parti Les Démocrates (LD) has reaffirmed its opposition status in Bénin after a special national council meeting addressing the party’s structural challenges and future outlook. This declaration follows the Forces Cauris pour un Bénin Émergent (FCBE)’s official exit from the opposition bloc following Romuald Wadagni’s presidential victory.

In a communiqué read by Lambert De La Pierre Sodji, the LD party—led by Nourénou Atchadé—emphasized its opposition standing, which was registered with the Ministry of Interior on April 26, 2022. The statement underscored the LD’s commitment to its role: « A modern and balanced democracy cannot thrive without a credible, structured, and responsible opposition ». Party leaders pledged to challenge the incoming administration of Romuald Wadagni while adhering to the country’s constitutional framework.

FCBE Concedes Opposition Role After Electoral Setbacks

The LD’s announcement coincides with a reshaped political landscape in Bénin. The FCBE, historically a moderate opposition force, formally abandoned its opposition stance after internal consultations. The party’s presidential candidate, Paul Hounkpè—who has since left the party—secured just 5.95% of votes, trailing far behind winner Wadagni.

FCBE also faced electoral setbacks in legislative polls, failing to secure any parliamentary seats. Party leader Yaya Garba acknowledged the electorate’s verdict, stating, « The people have spoken, and their choice guides our path forward ». The FCBE extended congratulations to outgoing President Patrice Talon for his two terms and the peaceful conduct of the election process.

With the FCBE’s departure, the Parti Les Démocrates now stands as Bénin’s primary opposition party. The LD had not contested the presidential race due to insufficient political endorsements under Bénin’s electoral code. The party’s council meeting coincides with preparations for the transition to the new executive leadership after the presidential results were finalized.
