Benin unveils bold climate roadmap to secure 2035 economic future

The Republic of Benin has officially launched its third Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC 3.0) for the 2026-2035 period, a comprehensive climate action plan designed to build a more resilient economy. The framework was unveiled during a high-level event in Cotonou, outlining a $14.5 billion financing strategy to address climate vulnerabilities across critical sectors.

Comprehensive climate strategy targets key economic pillars

The NDC 3.0 framework identifies eight priority sectors most vulnerable to climate change impacts: agriculture, energy, water resources, forestry, health, infrastructure, tourism, and coastal zones. The strategy emphasizes both mitigation and adaptation measures to safeguard Benin’s development trajectory.

Financing climate resilience across multiple fronts

The $14.5 billion financing requirement represents Benin’s estimated investment needs for implementing climate adaptation and mitigation measures through 2035. While the breakdown between public, private, and international funding sources remains unspecified, the plan calls for coordinated action among government agencies, development partners, and financial institutions.

Key objectives include reducing territorial vulnerability, protecting critical infrastructure, and strengthening community resilience to climate-related disasters such as droughts, flooding, coastal erosion, and natural resource degradation. The strategy also aims to integrate climate risk considerations into all future infrastructure projects and public policy decisions.

International cooperation highlighted during launch event

The Cotonou launch event brought together senior Beninese government officials, United Nations representatives, technical partners, and climate action stakeholders. Among the key participants were Georges Alé, Benin’s Minister of Living Environment and Sustainable Transport, and Aminatou Sar, UN Resident Coordinator in Benin.

Félix Kress, Cooperation Attaché at the German Embassy in Benin, participated as a representative of international cooperation efforts. His presence underscored the essential role of global partners in providing technical assistance, capacity building, and financial support for the NDC’s implementation.
