Cameroun: government dismisses rumors about president biya’s absence

The Cameroonian government has firmly denied rumors surrounding President Paul Biya’s prolonged absence from the country. Speaking to the media, Government Spokesman René Emmanuel Sadi confirmed that the 88-year-old leader is alive and remains in control of the state, despite reports suggesting otherwise.

President Biya’s whereabouts and health status

President Biya has been in Switzerland for at least 56 days, fueling speculation about his health and the functioning of state institutions. Addressing these concerns, Sadi stated, “President Paul Biya is alive and has not resigned. I must clarify that he will return to Cameroon soon, and it is premature to discuss any power vacuum at this stage.”

The spokesperson acknowledged that Biya underwent a medical procedure but provided no further details. “He underwent an intervention some time ago. I can confirm he is in Geneva, though he is not hospitalized,” Sadi explained. He reassured the public that Cameroon’s institutions continue to operate normally, with key administrative officials carrying out their duties without interruption.

No constitutional vacancy of power

Sadi emphasized that the question of a constitutional power vacuum should not arise, as the Constitutional Council—the only body authorized to make such a determination—has not issued any statement on the matter.

While the exact date of Biya’s return remains undisclosed, the government’s stance remains clear: his absence does not constitute a leadership crisis. The administration’s stability, Sadi asserted, is unaffected by the president’s temporary stay abroad.
