FIFA updates regulations for 2026 World Cup following Sénégal-Maroc CAN 2025 controversy

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, football’s governing body is strengthening its regulatory framework to prevent extreme on-field disputes.
This initiative follows the incidents that marked the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations final. On January 18 in Rabat, the departure of Sénégal players during the match, followed by scenes of total confusion, triggered significant reactions throughout the footballing community.
In response, FIFA has pushed through new amendments via the International Football Association Board (IFAB). These measures will take effect starting with the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19 across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
One of the primary changes dictates that any player who voluntarily leaves the pitch to protest a referee’s decision will now face an immediate red card. This sanction can also be applied to staff members who encourage such conduct.
“At the discretion of the organizer, the referee may expel any player leaving the field to contest a decision. This rule is also applicable to any official promoting such an attitude,” the official statement clarified.
Another significant modification involves match forfeits: any team responsible for the definitive stoppage of a game will be penalized with a loss by default. The stated goal is to stop any deliberate interruption of matches.
During the CAN 2025 final, Sénégal coach Pape Thiaw had ordered his squad to exit the field after a penalty was granted to Maroc and a goal for the Lions was disallowed. This episode threw the match into chaos before the players eventually returned.
With these new provisions, FIFA intends to implement a zero-tolerance policy against excessive protests to safeguard the integrity and flow of international competitions.
