The French Residence in Rabat hosted a distinguished gathering to mark Bastille Day, bringing together Moroccan officials, business leaders, civil society representatives, and media representatives. The event underscored the deepening bonds between France and Morocco, as highlighted by Ambassador Philippe Lalliot in his inaugural public address since assuming his post.
The ceremony, attended by key figures such as Mohamed Saad Berrada, Minister of National Education, Preschool, and Sports, and Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, Minister Delegate for Digital Transition and Administrative Reform, set the stage for a renewed partnership.
Ambassador Lalliot’s vision: a dynamic and resilient partnership
In his speech, Ambassador Lalliot emphasized the “quiet strength” of Morocco—a nation proud of its heritage yet firmly focused on progress. He reflected on his recent travels across cities like Casablanca, Tangier, Marrakech, and Laâyoune, where he inaugurated the first Alliance Française in the latter, reinforcing cultural ties.
The diplomat also celebrated the unity between Moroccan and French supporters during the recent FIFA World Cup quarterfinal, calling it a powerful testament to the people-to-people connections that define this bilateral relationship.
Political and diplomatic milestones
Ambassador Lalliot reiterated France’s unwavering support for Morocco’s position on the Sahara issue, aligning with the stance outlined in President Emmanuel Macron’s 2024 letter to King Mohammed VI. He stressed that France views the future of the region within the framework of Morocco’s sovereignty, while advocating for shared international principles.
The upcoming high-level meeting in Rabat on July 16, 2026, will bring together French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu and a dozen ministers, marking a new phase in bilateral cooperation. Over the past two years, nearly 40 ministerial visits have already strengthened political dialogue between the two nations.
Economic and security cooperation
France remains Morocco’s top foreign investor and employer, while Morocco plays a crucial role in combating terrorism, drug trafficking, and irregular migration, ensuring the safety of French citizens.
A historic milestone is on the horizon: the negotiation of a friendship treaty—a first for France with a non-European country. This agreement is expected to be finalized during an upcoming state visit by King Mohammed VI to France, further cementing the strategic partnership.
