Kalidou koulibaly injury concern ahead of world cup

With the FIFA World Cup just around the corner, football fans in Senegal are growing increasingly concerned about the prolonged absence of a key figure: Kalidou Koulibaly, the captain and defensive backbone of the national team.

The 34-year-old defender, who boasts 102 caps and two international goals, has been sidelined for weeks after sustaining a thigh injury during a training session at his club, Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League. His last appearance for the Saudi side dates back to April 8, leaving questions unanswered about his readiness for the tournament.

Kalidou Koulibaly’s injury, described as a thigh contusion leading to a hematoma, has required extended medical treatment. According to the club, he underwent a rehabilitation program at the Meena Clinic in Riyadh after medical examinations in Spain revealed the need for additional therapy targeting the anterior thigh muscle. Despite the rigorous recovery process, no definitive return date has been confirmed by Al-Hilal.

coaching team remains cautious

Al-Hilal’s head coach, Simone Inzaghi, has adopted a cautious stance, emphasizing that Koulibaly’s comeback will hinge on his response to ongoing treatment. « We have two injured players, Malcom and Koulibaly. Malcom is back and ready, but Koulibaly suffered a thigh contusion that caused a hematoma. We are monitoring his condition daily, and his return will depend on how he responds to treatment in the coming days, » Inzaghi stated during his latest press conference.

The uncertainty looms large as Senegal faces a tight schedule with just six league matches remaining for Al-Hilal before the World Cup kicks off. Koulibaly’s absence has already forced him to miss critical fixtures, including the Africa Cup of Nations final and friendlies against Peru and Gambia in March. The big question remains: will he recover in time to lead the Lions of Teranga in Qatar?
