Legal action filed over touba remarks against ousmane sonko

A formal complaint has been lodged with the public prosecutor’s office in Dakar, targeting opposition leader Ousmane Sonko over allegations of defamatory statements made about the holy city of Touba.

On 14 July 2026, the Collective of the Grandchildren of Serigne Touba filed a legal petition with the prosecutor’s office at the Court of First Instance in Dakar. The document, which bears a registry stamp dated 15 July 2026, formally requests an investigation into remarks attributed to Sonko during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters.

The complaint, signed by Serigne Modou Maroun Niang and Serigne Mourtalla Bousso, argues that Sonko’s claim of “dirty money entering the sacred city of Touba” constitutes a serious assault on its moral and spiritual integrity. In their view, such statements risk tarnishing the reputation of a place founded on principles of faith, integrity and justice by Cheikh Ahmadou Bamba, the city’s revered founder.

call for immediate inquiry and clarification

The petitioners urge the prosecutor to act swiftly, demanding not only an immediate investigation but also the summoning of Sonko for questioning. They seek his clarification on the source and intent behind his remarks, as well as any evidence supporting his allegations. The Collective insists that all necessary investigative measures be undertaken to verify the veracity of the claims.

In the event that the inquiry substantiates the accusations, the complainants call for appropriate legal action to be taken. While they cite potential violations of defamation and false news laws, no formal charges have yet been filed. The decision to pursue prosecution remains contingent on the outcome of the judicial review.

evidence presented in support of the complaint

The Collective asserts it possesses compelling evidence to substantiate its case, including video recordings of Sonko’s statements, their written transcripts, media reports and other relevant documentation. These materials, they argue, will help establish the full context and impact of the remarks on the city’s standing.
