Lyonnaise heaps bids farewell to champions league after barcelona defeat

Lindsey Heaps’ Champions League journey comes to a close with Barcelona defeat

Lindsey Heaps, the American midfielder, experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as she played her final Champions League match with Olympique Lyonnais, ultimately falling short against FC Barcelona. Just three weeks prior, she had believed she had scored the opener in the final against Arsenal, only for VAR to disallow it. The same scenario unfolded in Oslo, where Heaps again thought she had put Lyon ahead, but the goal was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.

An emotional exit from Europe’s elite competition

As the final whistle blew, Heaps reflected on a disappointing end to her European adventure. Despite falling to Barcelona in the final, she expressed pride in her time with Lyon and gratitude for the opportunity to compete at the highest level. “Football is unpredictable, and sometimes things don’t go your way. I’ve played in many finals—winning some and losing others. Barcelona deserve this victory; they’re one of the world’s best teams, and it’s always an honor to face them. Most of all, I’m proud of our team, proud of this club, and proud to have represented Olympique Lyonnais,” she shared after the match.

The American international, set to join Denver this summer, had hoped to leave Europe with a second Champions League title, following her 2022 triumph. Though her final match ended in defeat, her legacy at Lyon remains strong. She now has one last domestic fixture left—a league game against Paris FC on Friday—where she aims to secure her ninth title with the club.
