Niger: around ten soldiers killed in boko haram assault near N’Guigmi

Ten nigerien soldiers perish in Boko Haram attack

The strategic garrison town of N’Guigmi, nestled in Niger’s southeastern Diffa region, borders the expansive Lake Chad. This vast aquatic and marshy area is shared by Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger, and Chad.

Since 2009, N’Guigmi has tragically evolved into a significant jihadist stronghold, providing refuge for combatants from both Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Local reports indicate that approximately ten soldiers lost their lives in the Boko Haram assault, which occurred on Friday morning in the vicinity of N’Guigmi. Witnesses also confirmed casualties among the attackers, with the Nigerien army currently conducting extensive sweep operations in the area.

Residents from N’Guigmi, utilizing social media platforms, corroborated details of the offensive, specifying that ten military personnel and four members of the national guard were among the fallen.

While an official casualty count has yet to be released, the Nigerien press agency affirmed that victims “lost their lives following an attack by elements of the Boko Haram sect on the outskirts of N’Guigmi.”
