Us reaffirms commitment to Morocco’s sovereignty over western Sahara

Washington backs Rabat’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara

On the occasion of Morocco’s 27th Throne Day celebration, King Mohammed VI received a message from U.S. President Donald Trump, in which the American leader reaffirmed Washington’s unwavering stance on Western Sahara and its endorsement of Morocco’s autonomy proposal.

In his communication, Trump stated, «The United States stands firm: we recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara and support the Moroccan autonomy initiative as a serious, credible, and realistic foundation for a just and lasting solution.»

He emphasized that «any alternative path only perpetuates the status quo, which is unacceptable.» Trump added, «This dispute must come to an end now, and the United States will continue driving progress toward this goal.»

Strengthening historic ties between the two nations

Beyond the Western Sahara issue, Trump highlighted the 250-year-old bond between the two countries, describing the relationship as «a friendship forged in mutual trust and respect.»

The U.S. president praised King Mohammed VI’s visionary leadership, calling him «a cornerstone of stability» in the region. He commended Morocco’s pivotal role in fostering peace, combating extremism, and safeguarding shared security—particularly through the Abraham Accords.

Expanding cooperation in the Sahel and key economic sectors

Trump also announced plans to deepen collaboration in the Sahel to enhance regional security. Economically, he directed his administration to «prioritize economic and social development alongside Morocco, including within Western Sahara.»

The U.S. leader pointed to technology, innovation, energy, artificial intelligence, critical minerals, and defense as strategic pillars of the evolving partnership. He concluded with a call to «build a new era together, one that prioritizes the interests of both nations’ people.»
