Saint-Étienne and Nice face decisive Ligue 1 playoff showdown

Saint-Étienne and Nice battle for Ligue 1 survival in high-stakes playoff duel

A tense 0-0 draw in the first leg of the Ligue 1 relegation playoffs left both Saint-Étienne and Nice on tenterhooks ahead of Friday’s decisive return at Allianz Riviera. With no spectators allowed following recent crowd disturbances, the stakes couldn’t be higher for the 18th spot in next season’s top flight.

Ninety minutes to determine a season’s fate rarely brings out the best in competing sides. Saint-Étienne and Nice proved the point emphatically on Tuesday evening, delivering a lifeless first leg that left neutral observers underwhelmed. The numbers tell the story: 11 attempts on goal, none on target, and a combined expected goals tally of just 0.41.

From the opening whistle, caution trumped ambition. The only moments that could have shifted momentum came from referee Bastien, who twice declined to punish dangerous challenges—first on Saint-Étienne youngster Luan Gadegbeku (34th minute) and then on Nice’s Peprah Oppong (41st minute). Beyond those incidents, the game drifted into forgettable mediocrity.

Halftime offered a chance to reset, but if anything, the second half proved even less inspiring. A smattering of half-chances for the Greens briefly stirred the 37,000-strong faithful at Geoffroy-Guichard, including a delicate chip from Zuriko Davitachvili (58th minute) that drifted just wide of Yéhvann Diouf’s goal and a powerful volley from Augustine Boakye (60th minute) that sailed just over the crossbar. Maxime Bernauer’s strike (66th minute) gave the hosts hope, yet Nice’s visitors struggled to impose themselves, stifled by the resolute Saint-Étienne backline.

Under pressure from their home fans, the Aiglons pushed hard but to little avail. Without suspended striker Elye Wahi, manager Claude Puel turned to Mohamed-Ali Cho for pace, yet the Algerian international was blanketed by Julien Le Cardinal and Bernauer. The collective performance from Nice bordered on the anaemic, mirroring the lifeless encounter that preceded it.

The defining moment: Boudaoui’s brutal exit

The match’s turning point arrived after just 10 minutes when Hicham Boudaoui collided violently with Saint-Étienne’s Abdoulaye Kanté, leaving the Algerian with a suspected jaw fracture. Visibly dazed, Boudaoui attempted to continue before being replaced by Charles Vanhoutte. The incident casts a shadow over his prospects for both the return leg and potential World Cup preparations with Algeria, pending concussion protocol assessments.

Friday’s rematch at the Allianz Riviera will unfold behind closed doors after crowd trouble during the 34th matchday clash with Metz on May 17. Whether the spectacle lives up to expectations remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: after 90 minutes, 120 minutes, or a penalty shootout, the identity of Ligue 1’s 18th side for the 2026-27 campaign will be decided.
