Government ramps up flood preparedness ahead of 2026 rainy season
The Prime Minister of Senegal has directed cabinet ministers to implement urgent measures to mitigate flood risks before the onset of the next rainy season. During Wednesday’s cabinet meeting, Ousmane Sonko underscored the need for proactive disaster management, urging immediate action to safeguard communities.
According to government spokesperson Marie Rose Faye, several critical steps must be enforced without delay. Key priorities include the pre-positioning of emergency response assets and the organization of a nationwide interministerial simulation drill by June 15, 2026. This exercise will assess the state’s readiness to respond to potential disasters.
Government’s ongoing flood defense initiatives
The cabinet communiqué highlights ongoing flood prevention efforts, including:
- Clearing clogged drainage systems and water evacuation channels
- Inspecting and reinforcing drainage infrastructure
- Deploying additional water pumps in high-risk zones
- Developing tailored emergency response plans for vulnerable areas
Cross-sector collaboration mandated
Recognizing the complexity of flood management, the Prime Minister emphasized unified action across all government agencies. The Ministry of Hydraulics and Sanitation will lead coordination efforts, while the Ministry of the Interior will handle civil protection and crisis response.
These directives reflect Senegal’s commitment to minimizing flood-related damage and protecting lives through systematic, coordinated preparedness.
