Senegal political funds dispute exposes cabinet tensions

In a rare public display of internal government disagreement, Senegal‘s Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko has openly challenged the approach of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye regarding the regulation of political funds—a reform central to their joint election campaign. Speaking before lawmakers, Sonko revealed he had reservations about the parliamentary initiative led by deputy Guy Marius Sagna, arguing that such legislative matters should originate from the executive branch rather than the National Assembly.

Sonko emphasized that he had personally briefed the President about his concerns, stressing the urgency of addressing political fund oversight. However, President Faye reportedly responded cautiously, requesting additional time to assess the feasibility of the reform without committing to a specific timeline. This measured stance appears to have frustrated Sonko, who now warns that if decisive action is further delayed, he will take the matter directly to the Council of Ministers for approval.

The unfolding dispute between the two top leaders of Senegal’s executive branch underscores the challenges of coordinated governance in the country. Beyond the immediate issue of political fund transparency, their differing positions highlight broader tensions in policy execution and decision-making processes within the administration.
