Senegal president Bassirou Diomaye Faye removes Ousmane Sonko from prime minister post

In a major political development announced from the Presidential Palace in Dakar, Secretary General of the Presidency Oumar Samba Ba confirmed that Ousmane Sonko has been relieved of his role as the Prime Minister of Sénégal. The decision effectively dissolves the current government cabinet.

Official decree ends cabinet mandate

President Bassirou Diomaye Diakhar Faye signed decree n°2026-1128 on May 22, 2026, which formally concludes the tenure of Ousmane Sonko. According to the official statement, this termination also applies to all ministers and secretaries of state who served under his leadership. The outgoing administration has been directed to handle essential daily operations during this transition period.

Background of political tension

The relationship between the head of state and his former mentor has reportedly faced significant strain over the past several months. Ousmane Sonko, a prominent figure who was barred from contesting the 2024 presidential election against the former administration, had originally endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as the alternative candidate. Since Faye assumed office in April 2024, the political dynamic between the two leaders has been closely watched across the country.
