Senegal’s premier unveils bold plan to tackle youth unemployment
The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to placing employment at the heart of its economic and social agenda. Speaking before parliament on May 22, 2026, during a session dedicated to current affairs, Mr Sonko emphasized the urgent need to address youth unemployment through concrete measures.
Thousands of jobs in the pipeline, Sonko declared, adding that employment creation would remain the government’s top priority. This ambitious agenda is set against the backdrop of a broader economic strategy aimed at strengthening Senegal’s private sector and enhancing national economic sovereignty.
The Prime Minister acknowledged the challenges ahead, stressing that while his government cannot guarantee employment for every citizen, it is determined to create numerous opportunities for young Senegalese. « We will generate thousands of jobs, » he stated, underlining that this initiative would require collaboration between the state, private enterprises, and economic partners.
Addressing parliamentarians, Sonko highlighted the importance of prioritizing national interests in economic policy. « We are aligning our economic policies to ensure greater participation of Senegalese citizens in productive sectors, » he explained. « This does not mean we will exclude foreign investors. We are simply organizing our economy to ensure a substantial share of benefits remains within Senegal. »
A new economic patriotism bill on the horizon
One of the key announcements made during the session was the upcoming introduction of a patriotism économique bill. This legislation is designed to anchor industrial and commercial activities locally, thereby reinforcing Senegal’s economic sovereignty. Sonko emphasized that the success of this policy would depend on a more structured and supported national private sector, which he described as « a vital engine for growth and job creation. »
The Prime Minister concluded by calling for collective action to meet the aspirations of Senegal’s youth. « A well-structured private sector must be supported by its government, » he asserted, urging all stakeholders to work together to build a sustainable and inclusive economic future.
