In a meeting with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as part of the ongoing national dialogue, former Prime Minister Amadou Ba underscored the urgent need for political dialogue and financial credibility to strengthen Senegal’s stability.

During the audience at the Presidential Palace, Amadou Ba, one of several former heads of government consulted, described the initiative as crucial for the nation. He emphasized that deep consultations are essential to address Senegal’s most pressing challenges effectively.

The discussions between Amadou Ba and the President covered critical topics, including the country’s political landscape, proposed institutional reforms, and the economic and security challenges facing Senegal today.

Amadou Ba also highlighted the importance of electoral reforms, suggesting that additional time—ranging from ten to fifteen days—could facilitate broader consensus on these reforms. His recommendation was driven by a commitment to national interest rather than partisan interests.

« Senegal needs consensus, Senegal needs dialogue, » he stated firmly, adding that his proposal was made in the spirit of fostering unity across the political spectrum.

Economic concerns and international partnerships

The former Finance Minister expressed deep concerns about the current economic climate and its impact on Senegalese households. Global economic pressures are already taking a toll, and Amadou Ba warned that successive credit rating downgrades are increasing borrowing costs and limiting the government’s financial flexibility.

He also reflected on Senegal’s relationship with international financial institutions, particularly the International Monetary Fund (IMF). During his tenure as Finance Minister, Senegal went six years without receiving any funds from the IMF. Over a twelve-year period, the country operated without a funding program or disbursements.

Despite this, Senegal maintained its financial credibility, though the current economic environment demands new compromises to secure essential resources for development and investment.

Security and regional stability

The dialogue extended to security challenges, especially in light of growing tensions in the subregion. Amadou Ba called for a comprehensive approach to these issues, emphasizing the need to bolster defense and security forces to safeguard national stability.

A commitment to national unity

In closing, Amadou Ba reiterated his political stance while advocating for a calm and constructive approach to national issues. « I remain in the opposition, and I will stay there, » he said. « But some challenges go beyond political divisions. We must work together peacefully for the good of the country. »
