The July 28 gathering took place at the Laayoune residence of Mohamed Lemine Nafa, a member of the Sahraouis pour la Paix Permanent Political Commission, and included multiple movement leaders and senior cadres. The session was initiated by the American diplomatic mission to explore perspectives on the Western Sahara dossier.

The Sahraoui representatives presented a detailed overview of the movement’s organizational evolution over the past six years and outlined their vision for resolving the conflict. They also addressed queries from the U.S. delegation regarding the current state of Western Sahara negotiations.

The movement’s leaders emphasized the importance of formally integrating Sahraouis pour la Paix into the United Nations-mediated negotiation framework, describing it as a legitimate platform that brings together Sahrawi voices committed to a peaceful political resolution. They stressed that any credible negotiation process must include all representative bodies and civil society organizations within Sahrawi society.

The U.S. political counselor conveyed Washington’s strong commitment to ending the current impasse and reiterated American support for initiatives that would restore momentum to the political process toward a definitive solution. The diplomat acknowledged the constructive role of Sahraouis pour la Paix, describing it as a proactive Sahrawi voice engaged in seeking negotiated solutions. The counselor also assured that the United States places particular importance on supporting Sahrawi voices advocating for agreements that ensure regional stability and security, while helping to unlock diplomatic pathways that have long been hindered by confrontational dynamics.

This meeting follows a series of engagements between the United States and Sahraouis pour la Paix, including a delegation from the movement that met with U.S., French and British permanent representatives to the United Nations in New York. The timing coincides with the eve of the United Nations Security Council session reviewing progress on Resolution 2797, which has received broad international backing for advancing a political and peaceful solution to the Western Sahara question.
