Burkina Faso expels two EU diplomats amid diplomatic tensions

In a significant escalation of diplomatic strain, Burkina Faso has declared two European Union diplomats persona non grata, ordering them to leave the country within 72 hours.

Two senior European Union diplomats stationed in Ouagadougou have been given the persona non grata designation, a diplomatic term used to indicate unwelcome individuals. The decision affects the EU Delegation’s Deputy Head of Mission, who oversees political affairs and communications, as well as a Program Manager within the delegation.

Diplomatic fallout intensifies

The expulsion follows a sharp deterioration in relations between Burkina Faso and the European Union. This tension stems from a European Parliament resolution adopted in June 2026, which criticized the ongoing repression of civic space and fundamental freedoms in Burkina Faso. The resolution prompted a strong reaction from Burkinabè authorities, who summoned the EU Ambassador to express their disapproval.

The timing of the resolution—amid ongoing security challenges in the Sahel—has further strained an already fragile diplomatic relationship. Burkina Faso, like several of its neighbors in West Africa, has faced mounting pressure from international partners over governance and human rights concerns.

The EU diplomats now have a limited window to depart the country, marking a notable shift in how Burkina Faso engages with international partners. While the move underscores Ouagadougou’s growing assertiveness in foreign policy, it also signals a potential realignment in its diplomatic alliances.

Key points:

  • Two EU diplomats declared persona non grata and ordered to leave Burkina Faso within 72 hours.
  • The decision comes amid heightened diplomatic tensions following a European Parliament resolution on civic space in Burkina Faso.
  • Burkina Faso has summoned the EU Ambassador to register its strong dissatisfaction with the resolution.
