Gabon’s state visit to Sierra Leone strengthens economic ties

During a state visit to Freetown, the Gabonese president reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to deepen diplomatic and economic alliances across West Africa. This mission underscores Libreville’s strategic push to revive and expand its influence, particularly in Sierra Leone, where long-standing cooperation has yet to fully realize its potential.

With Sierra Leone’s economy built on mining, agriculture, and maritime trade, the country stands as a key partner for Gabon’s diversification goals. Boasting a GDP growth rate of 4.2% to 5.5% and steadily declining inflation, Sierra Leone offers promising economic prospects. Its mineral wealth—including iron ore, diamonds, rutile, bauxite, and gold—makes it the leading producer and exporter in the subregion, opening doors for joint ventures and investment.

The agricultural sector also plays a pivotal role, aiming for self-sufficiency in staples like rice and cocoa while fostering local processing—a shared ambition with Gabon. Strengthening ties in infrastructure and transport could further cement this partnership, aligning with Libreville’s strategy to cultivate new spheres of influence.
