The High Authority of Party Regulation (HARP) for PASTEF-Les Patriotes officially initiated the process for electing the party president on May 14, 2026. According to decision n°001/2026/HARP, published by the body, applications for candidacy are being accepted from May 15 until noon on May 20, 2026.
An open contest responding to presidential critiques?
This pivotal decision does not grant exclusivity to the incumbent president, Ousmane Sonko. Instead, it formally opens the internal competition to all factions within the party. While the current Prime Minister Sonko is eligible to seek a renewed mandate, the new framework ensures he does not have automatic access to the party’s top leadership position.
The establishment of this formal competitive process appears to directly address public statements made by the President of the Republic, Bassirou Diomaye Faye. President Faye had previously criticized the party for being excessively “personified.” By implementing an open and clearly regulated procedure, HARP directly confronts this critique, simultaneously raising crucial questions about PASTEF’s leadership at a significant juncture for the party.
When questioned recently about the party’s potential candidate for the 2029 presidential election, Diomaye Faye had indicated that any designation would be contingent upon the conclusions drawn from the upcoming party congress. He emphasized that the question of the candidate was not yet settled internally. This current election for party leadership represents a necessary preliminary step before that broader debate can take place.
A swift five-day window for candidacies
HARP has set a tight schedule for the internal election. Prospective candidates have just five working days to compile and submit their application files. These submissions must follow a standard declaration form appended to the decision. HARP adopted this resolution during a special session held on May 14, 2026.
The outcome of this crucial internal ballot will determine who officially embodies PASTEF’s leadership leading up to the next congress, where the party’s nominee for the 2029 presidential election is expected to be decided.
