Rabat: US embassy marks 250 years of independence, strengthens Morocco ties

The United States Embassy in Rabat recently commemorated the 250th anniversary of American independence with its annual National Day reception. This landmark event unfolded for the first time amidst the historic ambiance of Chellah.
High-ranking Moroccan officials, esteemed diplomats, and key partners from both the public and private sectors gathered for the occasion. The assembly served as a powerful testament to nearly two and a half centuries of robust friendship and collaborative efforts between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco.
Morocco holds the distinct honor of being the inaugural nation to recognize American independence, a pivotal act that laid the foundation for one of the United States’ most enduring diplomatic relationships.
This festive commemoration underscored the profound strength of the bilateral partnership across vital sectors such as diplomacy, security, trade, and investment. It also spotlighted a burgeoning collaboration in innovation, infrastructure development, and broader economic advancement.
Furthermore, the Embassy drew attention to the continuous American presence within Morocco, spanning from the venerable American Legation in Tangier – recognized as the oldest United States diplomatic property globally – to the recent inauguration of the new Consulate General headquarters in Casablanca. This sustained presence powerfully signifies a mutual commitment to forward-looking cooperation.
Speaking at the event, United States Ambassador to Rabat, Richard Duke Buchan III, emphasized that the celebration of America’s 250th anniversary provided a unique opportunity to honor «a partnership deeply rooted in history, continuously strengthened by mutual trust, and firmly oriented towards the challenges and opportunities of the next 250 years».
The Ambassador further elaborated that this profound partnership exemplifies a steadfast dedication to bolstering economic and human connections between both nations. Crucially, it actively supports His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s visionary initiative to position the Moroccan Sahara as a vibrant hub for transatlantic partnership and boundless opportunities.
Coincidentally, this significant celebration occurred while Morocco actively participated in the FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, offering yet another compelling illustration of the strong human bonds that perpetually reinforce the ties between these two countries.
The evening culminated in a spectacular display of fireworks and drones, beautifully symbolizing the enduring friendship between the United States and Morocco, alongside their shared aspirations for the future.
