Togo’s University of Datcha welcomes first president as new era begins

The University of Datcha marks a historic milestone with the appointment of its inaugural president. In a decisive move, the Togolese government has named Professor Essohanam Batchana as the leader of the nation’s third public university, a role critical to shaping the future of higher education in the Plateaux Region.

Professor Batchana brings unparalleled expertise to this position. A distinguished historian and full professor specializing in political history and international relations, he previously served as Director of Academic Affairs and Registration at the University of Lomé. His deep understanding of academic systems positions him perfectly to build a thriving institution from the ground up.

Strategic partnership for academic excellence

To ensure a strong foundation, Professor Batchana will work alongside Professor Kperkouma Walla, a renowned botanist and plant ecology expert, who has been appointed as the first vice-president. Together, they will spearhead the development of administrative frameworks, scientific initiatives, and educational programs that define the university’s identity.

The creation of the University of Datcha in September 2023 was a direct response to pressing needs in Togo’s education sector. The institution is designed to tackle two primary challenges:

• Easing campus congestion: alleviate overcrowding at existing universities in Lomé and Kara by expanding access to higher education.
