Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi has delivered a stark warning to his players, insisting that securing Premier League survival is anything but guaranteed. Despite occupying a relatively safe position in the standings, the Italian tactician stressed that complacency could prove fatal as his side prepares for a high-stakes London derby against Chelsea.
With West Ham’s recent loss to Newcastle, Spurs currently hold a two-point advantage over the Hammers, boast a superior goal difference, and have played one fewer match. Yet De Zerbi remains unwavering in his demand for absolute focus. “We cannot forget what the situation was just a month ago,” he emphasized. “We are not saved yet. I cannot answer that question now—before responding, we must earn a point in the Premier League. We must fight, play well, and stay fully concentrated on the game.”
Stamford Bridge’s daunting challenge
The upcoming fixture at Stamford Bridge presents a monumental test for Spurs. Historically, the club has struggled on Chelsea’s turf, with only one victory in their last 35 league visits. De Zerbi acknowledged the venue’s intimidating reputation, noting, “Chelsea’s ground is tough. It’s a formidable stadium, as they’ve been outstanding there for decades. But tomorrow, it’s a new match.”
GK conundrum and injury updates
One of De Zerbi’s toughest decisions looms over the team selection, particularly in goal. First-choice keeper Guglielmo Vicario is nearing full fitness after hernia surgery, but stand-in Antonin Kinsky has impressed during his absence, leaving the manager with a difficult choice. “Vicario is fit,” De Zerbi stated. “I’ll decide tomorrow. It’s not complicated—it’s straightforward. Yes, Vicario is our number one, but we must consider fitness, momentum, and other factors. I have an excellent relationship with both players, and whatever happens, it will be seamless.”
Meanwhile, James Maddison is on track to return after a lengthy absence, though De Zerbi remains cautious about his workload. “He had a minor issue earlier in the week but trained well yesterday and today,” the manager explained. “He’s not yet ready for 90 minutes, so we’ll discuss his role tomorrow.”
The captain, Cristian Romero, is also nearing recovery, with De Zerbi praising his leadership even in his absence. “Cristian is a fantastic player and an incredible captain. He’s been outstanding since I arrived, even when he wasn’t playing.”
Solanke sidelined as Spurs chase survival
Tottenham will be without striker Dominic Solanke due to a hamstring injury, further complicating their attacking options. With the stakes higher than ever, every point matters, and De Zerbi’s message is clear: the battle for survival is far from over.
