Unesco Mali backs 16th inter-lycées excellence competition to inspire youth in science

The UNESCO office in Mali proudly attended the award ceremony for the 16th Inter-Lycées Excellence Competition on Saturday, July 4, 2026. Organized by the UNESCO Club of the École Nationale d’Ingénieurs Abderhamane Baba Touré (ENI-ABT), this significant event unfolded at the ENI-ABT campus, bringing together a diverse assembly of students, educators, academic officials, and partners. The gathering served as a crucial platform to champion excellence among Malian youth, particularly within the vital realms of science and innovation.

During his opening address, Dr. Kélétigui DAOU, the Director General of ENI-ABT, extended heartfelt gratitude to UNESCO for its involvement in the activity. He commended the Organization’s unwavering dedication to advancing education across Mali. Dr. DAOU specifically highlighted UNESCO’s initiatives aimed at broadening access for girls to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, alongside fostering scientific research and innovation among young people.

The ceremony also featured a compelling address from the Secretary General of the ENI-ABT UNESCO Club. She underscored the profound significance of this 16th edition in acknowledging and celebrating academic merit and excellence. Furthermore, she emphasized the pivotal role that UNESCO Clubs play in promoting core values such as citizenship, peace, and sustainable development.

Mme Oumou Dicko, UNESCO’s Programs Officer for Science, warmly congratulated the organizers on the successful execution of this year’s competition and applauded the students for their consistent dedication. She outlined various opportunities that UNESCO extends to young individuals in research, including scholarships, mentorship programs, and invitations to participate in the Organization’s numerous international observances. Mme Dicko strongly encouraged students to deepen their engagement in scientific and innovative disciplines, recognizing their crucial contribution to the development of their nation.
