Wolfsburg relegated to second division after Paderborn playoff loss

VfL Wolfsburg’s Bundesliga survival bid ends in playoff upset against Paderborn

German side suffers historic relegation after 29 years in top flight following dramatic playoff defeat

VfL Wolfsburg’s 29-year stint in Germany’s top football division came to a dramatic end on Monday night, as they suffered a heartbreaking playoff defeat to Paderborn. The 1-2 extra-time loss in the relegation playoff sealed Wolfsburg’s fate, sending them down to the 2.Bundesliga for the first time since the 1996-97 season.

The match began brightly for the Wolves, who took the lead just three minutes into the game through Dzenan Pejcinovic, assisted by Adam Daghim. However, Wolfsburg’s hopes were quickly dashed when Joakim Maehle received two yellow cards in quick succession (11th and 14th minutes), leaving his team with ten men. The numerical disadvantage proved costly, as Paderborn fought back to level the scores at 1-1 before extra time.

In a tense second half, Paderborn dominated with 31 attempts on goal before the whistle for full-time. Wolfsburg’s defense, marshaled by goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, held firm until the dying seconds of extra time. But a crucial defensive error allowed Paderborn’s Laurin Curda to score the decisive goal in the 99th minute, ending Wolfsburg’s hopes of survival.

Christian Eriksen, the club’s star midfielder, watched from the bench as his teammates battled without success. The defeat marks a stunning collapse for a club that has featured top international talents like Eriksen and Lovro Majer in recent seasons. Meanwhile, Paderborn will celebrate their first Bundesliga appearance since 2019-2020, after pulling off one of the most improbable playoff victories in recent memory.
